Goal

Reduce anxiety about a new or hard situation by previewing it.

What you'll need

  • Index cards or a small notebook
  • Marker
  • Optional: photos

Step by step

  1. 1

Pick one upcoming event: doctor visit, birthday party, first day back at school.

  2. 2

Write 5–7 simple sentences from your child's perspective: 'Tomorrow I will go to Dr. Lee. She has a stethoscope.'

  3. 3

Include a sentence about what your child can do if they feel anxious: 'If I feel nervous I can squeeze my squishy ball.'

  4. 4

Read it together the night before and again in the morning.

  5. 5

Bring it with you. Re-read during the event if needed.

Variations & next steps

Take photos of the actual place ahead of time to make the story even more concrete.
