What it is

Many autistic kids process sensory input differently — sound, touch, movement, taste, and the often-overlooked vestibular and proprioceptive systems. A regulated nervous system is the prerequisite for everything else.

Core techniques you can start today

Sensory diet

A planned schedule of sensory activities throughout the day (swing for 10 min before breakfast, weighted blanket at story time) to keep your child in their optimal arousal zone.

Heavy work (proprioception)

Pushing, pulling, climbing, carrying. Wheelbarrow walks, carrying laundry, animal walks. Calming for almost every child.

Co-regulation

When your child is dysregulated, regulate yourself first. Slow your breath, soften your voice. Their nervous system mirrors yours.

Sensory safe space

A small tent, a closet with pillows, a quiet corner with dim light. Not a punishment — a tool your child can request.

Walk-through example

Pre-meltdown signs (covering ears, escalating energy)? Try 10 jumps on a mini-trampoline + 2 minutes of bear hugs + a sip of cold water through a straw. Heavy work + deep pressure + oral input. Reset.
